The 1oz Santa Maria silver coin is the first in the exciting new Rwandan Nautical Ounce Series. Each coin is struck from one troy ounce of .999 pure and the inaugural edition commemorates the 525th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' epic voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in search of the New World.
 
Like its highly successful predecessors, the African Wildlife Series and the Lunar Series, the Rwanda Nautical Ounce Series is backed by the Government of Rwanda and produced by the prestigious LEV Leipzig Precious Metals Factory in Germany. Each of these 1oz Santa Maria coins is a fitting illustration of the quality and workmanship that collectors have come to expect from this privately-owned mint.
The obverse of the 2017 silver coin features the Santa Maria, the flagship of Christopher Columbus. The ship was one of three that set out to explore the New World in 1492, a voyage that lead to the discovery of the US and the colonisation of the Americas. A stylised compass to the right of the Santa Maria adds another dash of nautical flavour and a collection of the type of instruments used by 15th century sailors is shown above. The reverse of the coins carries the coat of arms of Rwanda and is enhanced by several inscriptions including 'National Bank of Rwanda' in Kinyarwanda, a widely spoken local language.
