Captain America is part of Marvel Comics today, but the fictional superhero was originally created for Timely Comics in 1941. Captain America was designed by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby as a fictional super soldier fighting for the United States against the Axis powers during World War II. His popularity waned following the end of the war and Captain America was actually discontinued in 1950.
